Reinder Hovinga

“Outside of the city, life is different. Packed with places where time stood still. Filled with people and their stories. Reinder Hovinga is one of them. Every tuesday, friday and saturday he looks for leftovers when the market at the Grote Markt in the city of Groningen ends. Because some things don’t need to get thrown away. Some things are meant to stay. It resembles the way Reinder lives. His home is a monumental rectory from around 1700. Inside, it is packed with nostalgia. Old furniture, art and dust. With a dozen rooms and a underground cellar, it is more than remarkable. Hard to find these days. And that’s because humans embraced modern life, he says. Wanting more and more and more. Having lost the beauty of oldness.
I am following Reinder for about a year. Our encounters take place once a month. During such a visit I am allowed to take pictures from everything inside and around the house. Him included. I try to portray the atmosphere in the best possible way. My work is a combination of portraits and still lifes and stands for the stillness and melancholy of life.”

About project 'Lucht'

The corona measures have hit the art sector enormously. Exhibitions and art grants have been canceled or postponed. It is an uncertain time for many artists. With the Air project, Kunstpunt Groningen wants to support artists and designers from the municipality of Groningen. 87 Groningen artists have received a stipend with which they have created new work, including Sebastiaan Rodenhuis. With a billboard exhibition from September 27 to October 17, we present all artists spread throughout the city of Groningen. View the work of the other artists here.
