Looking is touching
“Looking is touching is a work about feeling and faltering. An investigation into the everyday, what we do every day, living. Its absurdity and naked vulnerability. The search for making a shared vulnerability visible and tangible. it to live? How do you actually do that?
The signal from our planet to humans is obvious: “Dear human beings, you have a misunderstanding about how to live, it is time to think deeply about yourself. Please don’t take too long on that, thinking that, I urgently need your help to survive.” I investigate the misunderstanding about how to live from my father’s archive. The archive consists of photos, text and objects. I also collected the words of my father. Every week I bring a few words to my father and ask him to write his words. I also record the conversations during our walks.
At the beginning of 2019 my father was diagnosed with dementia. Since then, after a period of neglect, he has been living in a care home. Does it matter if it’s before or after lunch? If only your memories do what? When your echo drifts like loose sand? Can lessons be learned from the last stage of life for the present? The way in which I process and present the material is an attempt to make the intimate, as personal vulnerability, comprehensible to the viewer.”
About project 'Lucht'
The corona measures have hit the art sector enormously. Exhibitions and art grants have been canceled or postponed. It is an uncertain time for many artists. With the Lucht project, Kunstpunt Groningen wants to support artists and designers from the municipality of Groningen. 87 Groningen artists have received a stipend with which they have created new work, including Jannemarein Renout. With a billboard exhibition from September 27 to October 17, we present all artists spread throughout the city of Groningen. View the work of the other artists here.
