In the middle of the Grote Markt in Groningen, in the heart of the compass rose, is a round stone designed by Joachim Koops, a designer from Groningen.
This design consists of three elements:
1: A protractor that reinforces the original function of the compass rose as a measurement instrument.
2: A memorial text in commemoration of the liberation of the Netherlands: 5 mei 1995 - 50 jaar bevrijding' '5 mei 2995 - Duizend jaar in vrijheid verder' (translation: 'May 5th 1995 - 50 years of liberty.' '5th of May 2995 - A thousand years in freeform forward.'
3: A symbol marking the 1995 time capsule buried for a thousand years (until the year 2995) two meters below the compass rose. This symbol is part of a code message.
The solution to the code and also the universal declaration of human rights are placed in engraving inside the timecapsule. For those who cannot wait until the one thousand year term for the time capsule has expired; The solution to the code om the stone can also be found through a number of clues that have been placed in various ways on places in the public space.
