Gert van Oortmerssen studied Art History (RuG 1982-1988) and simultaneously took the evening course at Minerva Art Academy (1984-1989), also in Groningen. He graduated cum laude in the field of interdisciplinary art. He also works as a restorer of heritage, especially heritage from archaeological excavations.

The inspiration for his work stems on the one hand from Art History (content, philosophical) and on the other hand from the object-based materiality of archaeological objects: think decay processes, corrosion on metals, traces in the soil.

Van Oortmerssen works in long-term series that are worked on at intervals. Style and medium are not an end in themselves. As a result, works can appear to be either abstract or figurative, design or installation art.
