Untitled (wall sculpture)

Riek Ammermann

About this artwork.

This abstract ceramic wall sculpture was placed on the facade of the school building in 1973. It is a “haut relief” made by Riek Ammermann, i.e. a relief in which the images emerge from the plane. The sculpture has a depth of 15 centimetres and an area of over 4 square metres. The piece gets its dynamic and playful quality from the varied pattern of shapes and colours.

Ammermann created the sculpture in 1973. She did so within the framework of the percentage scheme established by the central government in 1951. This determined that 1 to 1.5 percent of the building budget could be spent on the “decorative ornaments” for the new building. This was understood to mean "the installation of permanent artwork of a monumental character”.
