Untitled (photo underneath the Herebrug - foto onder Herebrug)
Rommert Boonstra
About this artwork.
The photo printed on canvas is by Rommert Boonstra. A metal box, with gracefully curled legs, is placed on coarse earth and in it, a photo of a harbour scene in Groningen.
The work was created for the municipal photography commission in 1994. The question was to "give an idea of Groningen’s cultural identity”. For this commission, Boonstra brought together a lot of material about characteristic buildings and works of art of the city with portraits of historical figures and family portraits from his own archive. The Groningen public could choose from ten of his photos for the Herebrug.
Rommert Boonstra played an important role in the development of staged photography in the early 1980s. No existing situations are captured, but created especially for the photo. Boonstra creates scenes out of various objects and materials, which he then photographs. Memories play an important role in his work. Since he lived in Groningen until he was twenty-six years old, the city is also part of his sculpture reservoir.
