Untitled

About this artwork.
In front of the former tax office at the Hofstede de Grootkade are four marble “mini-obelisks” made by Harm van Weerden. The upper parts of the artwork are smoothly polished, while the lower halves show that they have been worked on with a pointed chisel. From right to left the mini-obelisks increase in width and also the distance between the blocks of marble increases from right to left. The sculpture continues in the pavement, in the form of a row of “stone paving tiles” marked as dice along the entire front of the building.
The sculpture is an example of the so-called “neighbourhood projects” with which Van Weerden has been very involved. In such projects, the focus is not so much on the image itself, but rather on the design of the neighbourhood around a building.
