About this artwork.
The sculpture is an open structure of two uneven and partially open planes that intersect. The small element has a compact shape and an even thickness. The steep and sharply angled surface, which seems to tilt slightly due to its varying thickness, suggests upward movement and gives the sculpture a dynamic quality. The sculpture, modelled after a design by M. Brinkgreve, dates from 1961 and is remarkably modern for that time. Contrary to what the piece might suggest, the designer was not a professional working artist, but a teacher of drawing and painting at a technical school.
The story behind the creation of the sculpture is as surprising as the design was uninhibited. The direct cause for the creation of the sculpture was a fair in the Stadspark, intended to promote the city. The Groningen division of the foundation for the professional training of plasterers wanted an eye-catcher at their own stand to demonstrate the level of education. On the basis of a scale model in hardboard made by Brinkgreve, plasterers apprentices made the work of art on the spot. The sculpture has a frame made of rebar, covered with stone mesh, over which another layer of plaster has been applied.
