Untitled
Mattheus Meesters
About this artwork.
This female figure is reminiscent of the limestone statue Sun-Worshipper (1952) by Mattheus Meesters in the Noorderplantsoen. However, this female figure in the Stadspark is more naturalistic (modelled after nature) and is made of bronze. The small female figure sits with her legs raised and her head tilted a little backwards. The Sun-Worshipper has the same posture, but she is different because she appears to be highly relaxed.
Her body shape and face is very similar to another female figure, Untitled by Meesters – also made of bronze – that stands by the nursing home on the Molukkenpad: they have the same posture, haircut and are half-dressed.
The sculptor and master craftsman Mattheus Meesters, born in Haren in 1908, received lessons at the M.T.S. school in Groningen at the Department of Applied Arts and Crafts. The famous Groningen artist Willem Valk was his teacher there. Various works of art by Matthew Masters can be found in the city. One of his most famous works is a statue in the Noorderplantsoen, which the artist referred to as Untitled, but which became known as Sun-worshipper (Zonaanbidster).
