Untitled (22 elements)

Henk Visch

About this artwork.

At first sight, the 22 bronze statues may look the same, but Visch made four types. The differences lie mainly in the arm gestures. One puts his left arm in front of his stomach and allows his right one to hang loose along the body. A second and third hold both arms in front of their stomach or along the body. The last type places both hands in his lap. It is as if, with their different gestures, they are always giving a different meaning to the concept of “waiting”. The eyes in the somewhat troubled faces are painted.

The bronze sculptures are very naturally and subtly incorporated into their surroundings. Because of their size they are modest, almost casually present.

About the assignment.

Henk Visch made the artwork within the framework of the percentageregeling (percent for art). This regulation, which was established by the State in 1951, means that a half to two percent of the building cost of government buildings is spent on art.

Visch is an internationally working artist. There is also another statue of him in Groningen, at the Oosterhaven: a larger-than-life figure resting on his hands and knees with the mysterious title Secret Life of a Public Body (2002).
