Auke de Vries

About this artwork.

The steel sculptures of Auke de Vries are located on the island of the Nonnengat in the Hoornsemeer. The sculptures, which stand on concrete pedestals, reach to the sky as two drawn lines that end in a the shape of a rhombus. The piece was commissioned by KPN in 1992.

Auke de Vries initially worked primarily as a painter, draughtsman and etcher. However, in the 1970s he began to produce small spatial models that were intended as an aid for making graphs. These preliminary studies soon took on a life of their own and eventually developed into independent sculptures.

De Vries' work is based on observations of reality. He bases his abstract spatial works on photographs and sketches of the natural and urban environment.

De Vries designed a series of sculptures for the public space. One of the most famous examples of this is the 200-metre-long Maas sculpture along the Nieuwe Willemsbrug in Rotterdam. This piece of art consists of separate elements that are ingeniously suspended in the air. Another well-known work by De Vries is The Netherlands, Land by the Sea (Nederland, Land aan de Zee), which 'floats' in the atrium of the Lower House building.
