Under Sand (Zand Erover – 2 parts)
Gert Sennema
About this artwork.
A boy of about ten years of age stands at the edge of a sandbox which has bronze castings hidden under the sand. The image and its title Under Sand refer to the hidden histories people and villages carry with them. Thesinge owes its origins in part to monks who founded a monastery here in the 12th century. The monks may have left Thesinge centuries ago and this boy’s ancestors have long since passed. But they are the foundation stones, the building blocks, of this village, this child and history.
During the redesign of Thesinge, Gert E. Sennema from the then municipality of Ten Boer was commissioned to produce a work of art that paid homage the long and rich (monastic) history of the village.
The model for this piece was a little boy from the village of Thesinge, whose family has lived in the village for generations.
And a little way apart, on the jetty, there are also three miniature milk canisters and a milk boat – all part of the installation, all referring to the hidden histories of the village.
