Two hands (Twee handen)
Wessel Couzijn
About this artwork.
The limestone relief of Wessel Couzijn forms part of one of the four balconies. Abstract figures have been carved out of the rectangular piece of stone. The material has been cut away completely in places so that people can look through it. The shadows of the recesses reinforce the spatial effect of the relief. Couzijn used the so-called openwork technique. This means that the shapes are sunk into the slab by recesses and cavities.
Because the facade and the relief are made of the same material, they form a unified whole. It is an example of a so-called “synthetic” relationship between architecture and sculpture. The artwork is part of the architecture without giving up its own independence.
