Tonny van Leeuwen

About this artwork.
A bronze statue of goalkeeper Tonny van Leeuwen is in action at the top of the stairs near the FC Groningen team photo. Artist Lia Krol created this artwork as part of a commission by the FC Groningen Supporters’ Association.
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Supporters’ Association, this piece of art is a gift for the supporters of FC Groningen. Van Leeuwen played for GVAV from 1963 to 1971 and is considered the best goalkeeper ever to have played for the FC Groningen predecessor. In the 1970-71 season, the ball only passed him seven times in 30 games! To this day, he is still the goalkeeper with the fewest number of concessions in any one season. Friend and former teammate Piet Fransen unveiled the statue in the presence of a large number of footballers with whom Van Leeuwen had played.
