The Palaeolithic Hand Axe (De Vuistbijl)

Bastiaan de Groot

About this artwork.

Until the beginning of the 1980s, Bastiaan de Groot worked mainly with figures. One of his most famous works from that period is Pregnant Annet (Zwangere Annet), which is located at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). After this, the artist began working in a more abstract way.

The Palaeolithic Hand Ax from 1983 is a 2.5-metre-tall piece of art standing on a raised grassy common. When creating the piece, the artist was inspired by prehistoric hand axes. The enormous chunk of stone, which stands upright in the ground like a megalith, evokes a prehistoric atmosphere.
