The Encounter (De Ontmoeting)
Bastiaan de Groot
About this artwork.
Until the beginning of the 1980s, Bastiaan de Groot worked mainly with figures. One of his most famous works from that period is Pregnant Annet (Zwangere Annet), which is located at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). After this, the artist began working in a more abstract way.
Around 1983 De Groot created a series of sculptures consisting of two pieces of stone, The Encounter being one of them. Two colossal stones are placed on top of each other, exuding “connectedness”, but the sculpture also evokes tension because it seems as if the lower stone can barely resist the weight of the upper stone.
The work was part of the project ''Summer sculptures '84''.
