About this artwork.
On 6 November 2007, the monument The drowned people of Nienoord (De verdronkenen van Nienoord) was unveiled at the Hoendiep in Hoogkerk. That day it was a hundred years ago that a tragic accident took place on or near this spot that left no one in the province of Groningen untouched at the time. In the late foggy evening of 6 November 1907, the coach of the noble Van Panhuys family ended up in the water. All five occupants drowned: the squire and his wife, their son and daughter-in-law and the footman. Only the coachman survived the accident. Jonkheer Van Panhuys lived with his family in Nienoord castle in Leek. He was nationally known as Minister of State, Vice President of the Council of State and Commissioner of the King in Groningen.
The monument was erected on the initiative of De Vereniging Nationale Feesten Hoogkerk (the Hoogkerk Association for National Celebrations), which managed to interest various financiers in the piece of art.
