The Bench (De Bank)

Bastiaan de Groot

About this artwork.

Until the beginning of the 1980s, Bastiaan de Groot worked mainly with figures. One of his most famous works from that period is Pregnant Annet (Zwangere Annet), which is located at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). After this, the artist began working in a more abstract way.

The Bench, from 1983, has been carved out of one slab of marble. Its more or less round finish gives the bench a comfortable quality that invites you to sit or lie down. The curves and the uneven seating surface – in the lower and upper sections – give the piece a human shape. It is as if the artist has left a reclining figure to rest on the stone bench.

According to De Groot, the artwork aligns with the character of the natural recreation area the Hoornse Meer, with its cycling and walking paths, footbridges and picnic areas.

The sculpture was made under the visual arts scheme (Beeldende Kunst Regeling or BKR).
