The Bell (De Clocke)

Maker onbekend

About this artwork.

On the corner building Vismarkt-Guldenstraat (between both markets 6) there is a seventeenth-century facade with a bell portrayed, which was reinstalled here in 1929. The story goes that the bell is reminiscent of the time about five centuries ago, when a bell or a bell on a support was sounded at this place, to make it clear to the population that fresh fish had been brought in from Zoutkamp. At that time there was a house or inn here called “De Clocke” (The Bell). The Tingtangstraatje – the narrow street between het Koude Gat and Between Both Markets – would have been named after the sound of the bell.

The maker of the facade is unknown.
