The apple of knowledge (De appel der kennis – 3 elements)
Fred Mennens, Henk Vos
About this artwork.
In the schoolyard of the Wessel Gansfort College there is an enormous apple where a section has been cut out. The inside of the apple shows texts and photos from school books and other study material.
At the main entrance of the school building, the carved-out part can be found in two sections. These wall-hung parts are made of the same material as the rest of the apple, enamelled steel and wood, and also contain texts, drawings and photographs.
Henk Vos explains the work: "We see the school as an institution where knowledge is consumed. The apple as a symbol of knowledge comes from the tree of wisdom."
