Sun College
Jeroen Doorenweerd
About this artwork.
Jeroen Doorenweerd’s art usually starts off with precision-made wooden items – while the function of his objects is not always immediately clear, they nevertheless invite you to enter and explore. A fine example of this is Sun College at the university campus on Zernikelaan. This piece is reminiscent of an open-air lecture hall. But rather than enjoy professor's lecture, the students soak up the sun.
This art can be found at the back of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration. The faculty used the ideas of Professor L Karsten as a starting point for this work of art. According to Karsten, humans are active in three spheres: the sphere of large institutions, the sphere of organisations and the domestic sphere. The trick is to learn how to balance these three spheres every day: finding the optimum balance of work, relaxation and play. Doorenweerd’s benches guide the transition from work to relaxation (in the sun).
Sun College is part of the University of Groningen’s art project entitled Kennisjaren 1994-2014 (Years of Knowledge 1994–2014). This project was started in 1994 on the occasion of the 380th anniversary of the university and ended in 2014 on the occasion of its 400th anniversary."
