Sun and moon (Zon en maan)

Wia van Dijk

About this artwork.

The sculpture is composed of two elements: an open elliptical shape representing the sun and the crescent-shaped closed element, the moon. These two elements together form “the eye”, which symbolises the eternal presence of sun and moon. The elements of the sculpture contrast, both in terms of colour and material treatment as well as symbolically, The "moon" is coarse-grained, the "sun" is smoother. According to the artist, the work of art is about opposites: "light and dark, day and night, open and closed, sun and moon."

Contrasts are an important theme in the work of Wia van Dijk. A characteristic of this is that the opposites are not opposing, but are forged into unity. They complement each other or merge into each other, as is the case with Sun and Moon in a certain sense. The artist says about this: “By allowing the moon to wear the colours of the sunlight, you can also see the sculpture as the sun with its rays. The moon is absorbed by the sun; conversely, the sun can be part of the non-visible part of the moon.”
