Sugar Tunnels

Wineke Gartz

About this artwork.

In the artwork on the inside of the Suikertunnels, past, present and future (dream) come together. Artist Wineke Gartz created a transparent collage of colour, rhythm and lines. The design is a landscape in which timelines and movements play a role. A mix of progress and old technology. Fragments of history, the current situation and the future are woven into the artwork.

A picturesque composition of photo and video images, drawn images and collages can be seen on panels on the walls. The coloured images alternate with smaller areas of bare concrete. Large painted areas of colour can also be seen on the ceilings. “The viaducts and the art application together form a sculptural unity,” Gartz explains.

The collage contains the rich craft and industrial history of the location. Among other things, oil mill De Hoop and sawmill De Bok, the Sugar Factory, shipyards and the Hoendiep as a canal for the towpath - with images of ships, heavy labour, rope and cranes - are reflected in it. You can also see the Zeeheldenbuurt and the current Suikerunieterrein under construction.

The artwork will be completed in the spring of 2025.
