Streetart Papengang

About this artwork.

Located in the middle of the nightlife area of the city, this alley had a somewhat bad image. The street art gives the illustrious corridor a new face. Literal. From grubby alley to attractive backstreet. With the graffiti art of local Roland Carter, the Papengang has been transformed into a colorful gateway to the Groningen nightlife.

In the autumn of 2022, another eight artists have brightend up the alley: Klaas Lageweg, Klaas Boter, Iris Kruizinga, Loes Faber, Hans Vos, ToupToup, Matthieu Keuter van Lewenborg and the duo Vaaf: Lotte Mask and Jonna Bo Lammers.

A light artwork has been placed above the alley. It is called Heiligenschijn, ('Heiligenschein', or 'hotspot') ,and is a reference to the 'paps' and the hidden church that were once found on this spot. The luminous circles resemble halos as they are often depicted above the heads of divine or holy persons, for example in paintings. The work consists of custom-made rings, in different diameters. Lichtpunt Theatertechniek took care of the design, installation and programming of the rings, which can be controlled individually.
