Sign (Teken)

Klaas van Dijk

About this artwork.

Sign consists of two elongated copper components that merge into each other at the top and bottom. The sculpture, much like a beacon, stands four metres tall. What particularly catches the eye is the indentation in one of the two elements. This ensures that the flowing form of the artwork is somewhat interrupted.

Klaas van Dijk, creator of this piece, gained fame for his manually crafted copper and aluminium wall objects and sculptures. But Van Dijk was also active in other fields of art. He also painted, created watercolours, drew and lithographed landscapes.

Van Dijk received his training from the well-known Groningen sculptor Willem Valk. In the nineteen-twenties and thirties, he was also a member of the Groningen artist group De Ploeg. Although the Netherlands was his home base, he also worked in France and the United States. In 1977, he received the cultural Egberts Prize in Groningen, for his services to De Ploeg, among other things. Van Dijk worked tirelessly to ensure that young artists would join this artists' collective.
