Ship in the Wind (Schip in de Wind)
Herbert Koekkoek
About this artwork.
Ship in the Wind stands proud on an artificial hill in the Ten Boer cemetery. The history of Ten Boer is closely linked to the location of the village on the Damsterdiep. As early as the 17th century, the village was connected to the cities of Groningen, Appingedam and Delfzijl by means of a regular barge service. This history is expressed in the sculpture through the boot hook, the sails and the women who laboured to pull the ship forward. At the same time, this ship represents the course of life, from arrival (birth) to departure (death).
Atop the image at night, twenty small lights light up, like the top light of boats or like a small starry sky. The lights are powered by a solar panel integrated into the image.
Herbert Koekoek created this sculpture under commission from the former municipality of Ten Boer.
