Scholtenbank
J. de Vogel
About this artwork.
The bench is a tribute to the industrialist Jan Evert Scholten (1849-1918). A few stairs lead to the monumental bench in which a bronze portrait of Scholten is placed in a natural stone frame. J.A. Mulock Houwer, the former director of the Municipal Works Department, manufactured the bench. He was also the designer of the Scholtenmonument in the Stadspark.
Jan Evert Scholten and his father Willem Albert founded numerous potato and strawboard factories in the province of Groningen. In addition, they had a broad interest in art, culture and architecture, and were committed to the urban population in many ways. Among other things, Jan Evert Scholten played a leading role in the establishment of the Vereniging Het Stadspark in 1909, which aimed to create a sports and nature park for the inhabitants of the city of Groningen.
