Plaque with pharmacy symbol
Rinus Meijer
About this artwork.
The limestone reliëf in the side wall of the building at Herestraat 109 refers to the profession of pharmacist that used to be practised in the building. The reason for the placement of the relief was a thorough renovation of the building in 1948. The name of the principal for the renovation can be found on the stone. The relief was probably made by Rinus Meijer.
The bowl from which a snake drinks is a variant of the rod of Asclepius that is often used as a symbol for medicine. The rod of Asclepius consists of a staff around which a snake is entwined. The word rod of Asclepius refers to the ancient Greek god of medicine: Asclepius. The snake is a symbol of healing on the rod of Asclepius; its ability to shed its skin is seen as a form of rejuvenation or rebirth.
