Park Meerstad
Jeroen Doorenweerd
About this artwork.
Park Meerstad is a land art project that came about as a collaboration between artist Jeroen Doorenweerd and landscape architect Mathijs Dijkstra of MD Landschapsarchitectuur (now LAOS). In this project, Doorenweerd wanted to make one big rhythmic gesture, "a fluid and undulating area of 'good vibrations' in which different rules seem to apply compared to outside," according to the artist. The design for the "vibrations" came about by literally folding a sheet on a scale model. The rhythmic and plastic arrangement of the wrinkles of the sheet formed the basis for the hilly Meerstad Park, through which a "tight" concrete cycle path was projected. Inside, natural elements have been used to create various special places, such as stepping stones and a wooden cable car.
The challenging, hilly and green area - in combination with Woldmeer lake, the beach and the cycling and walking paths - is a lively meeting place on the outskirts of Groningen.
There are two other works of art by Jeroen van Doorenweerd in the Municipality of Groningen.
