Muurschilderingen Atensheerd (3 exemplaren) (Murals Atensheerd (3 pieces))

Michel Velt

About this artwork.

De Atensheerd in Beijum is adorned by three meter-high colorful murals of animal figures, namely a peacock, parrots and a heron, and a town by the sea. The work is by the Groninger Street artist Michel Velt.

Michel Velt (1986) started with graffiti at a young age. He learned to paint at the art academy Minerva and was inspired by art from the Jugendstil period. This art movement arose around 1890 and aimed to create a more beautiful world and better society through art. Characteristic is the use of graceful elements, for which inspiration was taken from nature; floral and animal motifs are a common theme.

Velt's mission is in line with the earlier artists of the Jugendstil: to make the world more beautiful through art. His colorful paintings can be seen in various (world) cities, including London, New York and Berlin.

About the assignment.

The facade painting is part of the Nijestee housing corporation project Pimp je Portiek and is financed from the New Local Agreement, a former partnership of the municipality of Groningen and the housing corporations. The artwork can be classified under the heading of community art: art for and by residents. The goal is twofold; decorating public spaces on the one hand, and promoting resident participation on the other.

Location.

Atensheerd, Atensheerd 79-81, Atensheerd 49-57
