Dick Nanninga
Jack Lack (Roman de Laporte)
About this artwork.
A man, dressed in an Orange uniform, looks friendly and somewhat expectant, his eyes tilted upwards. This impressive mural, which covers no less than four floors, was made in a realistic style. The overlapping planes in the composition suggest movement, as if the man has just stopped, or could run away again.
The man depicted is footballer Dick Nanninga; he grew up in the Oosterpark district that he now looks out over. Nanninga plays football for the Oosterparkers, Veendam, Roda JC, MVV and the Dutch national team. In 1978, he scored a field goal during the World Cup final against Argentina – making him the only footballer for the Dutch national team to achieve this to date.
After Nanninga's death in 2015, the idea arose from the neighbourhood to create a tribute to the footballer. Five hundred people sign a petition for a mural and the plan is taken up by the municipality, in collaboration with housing corporation Nijenstee and Writer’s Block, production house for street art. Artist Jack Lack eventually creates the enormous mural (despite a severe fear of heights). The work will be unveiled on November 4, 2022, in the presence of Nanninga’s family and residents of the Oosterpark district.
