Mrs Wichers (Vrouw Wichers)

Mette Bus

About this artwork.

Mrs Wichers is a corpulent folk woman in a yellow floral dress. This 'moeke' (motherly figure) with crossed arms, is keeping an eye on the H.L. Wichersstraat. This street is named after the landlord Hendrik Ludolf Wichers (1747-1840).

Following the refurbishment of the H.L. Wichersstraat in 1982, the inhabitants of the street formed a working group with the aim of creating a work of art. Because the municipality did not want to make a financial contribution towards this, the working group decided to raise the money in a different way. A campaign in the Grand Theatre in 1984 yielded enough to pay for the material costs of the sculpture. Street resident and artist Mette Bus then created the artwork at cost price.

In 1985, Mrs Wichers was driven 'out of her socks' by a drunk driver. Thanks to the insurance compensation, the artist was able to make a new Mrs Wichers. On the approach to the Southern Ring Road, this work of art stands on the Verlengde Lodewijkstraat near the H.L. Wichersstraat.
