Madonna of the Mists (Madonna van de Nevelen)
Luk van Soom
About this artwork.
Madonna of the Mists is a figure that seems to have arisen from clouds and fragments of mist. The “mist” envelops and obscures, but in the mist the breasts, buttocks and legs of 'Our Lady' are clearly recognisable. She holds her arms folded over each other in front of her body, as if to rock the absent child.
The sculpture was dubbed the 'White Lady' by local residents after it was installed – an association that is also evoked by the location of the Madonna at Reitdiep, a place where the fog banks hang low in the morning and the atmosphere is mysterious.
Upon his farewell as director of housing corporation In, Louwris Kroon wanted to give a gift rather than receive one. He called on all tenants to submit a housing request. Out of 55 entries the idea of Wim Grijze was rewarded: he wanted a piece of art for his neighbourhood Paddepoel-Zuid. In collaboration with the CBK and prize-winner Grijze, the bronze Madonna of the Mists by the artist Luk van Soom was chosen from a pre-selection. The “Madonna” is a cast copy of a statue standing in a private clinic in Belgium.
