Low Profile
Gunnar Daan
About this artwork.
Architect and artist Gunnar Daan designed a land sculpture in which he was inspired by the work of emeritus professor of biological psychiatry Rudy van den Hoofdakker, as a poet known as Rutger Kopland. In 1966, Van den Hoofdakker published his dissertation “Behaviour and EEG of drowsy and sleeping cats”, on sleep disorders.
Daan distilled the theme “sleep” from this for his work of art. The artwork shows the sleeping figures of a woman, a man, a dog and a cat. The figures are embedded in the embankment and surrounded by a stainless steel elevation. The steel thus functions as a kind of low profile (hence the title) that is filled with earth.
This artwork Low Profile is part of the art project Kennisjaren 1994-2014 (Years of Knowledge 1994–2014) of the University of Groningen. This project was started in 1994 on the occasion of the 380th anniversary of the university and ended in 2014 on the occasion of its 400th anniversary.
