Johannes Swint

Willem Valk

About this artwork.

A side-on portrait in white sandstone relief adorns a red wall on the edge of the Linneausplein. The plaque shows Johannes Swint, a communist resistance fighter from this area who was shot and killed in retaliation for an alleged attack on an officer in the opposition.

It is the first memorial plaque that was unveiled, shortly after the Netherlands was liberated. At first it was mounted on the playground building on Oliemuldersweg before later being moved to the new building on the Resedastraat when it was finally brought inside, away from the elements.

A new location for this plaque was decided upon by the municipality in collaboration with Swint’s heirs, local residents and a historian. So, from 16 April 2020, this memorial – a memorial to the communist resistance – is once again back in a public space.

Location.

Linnaeusplein (groenstrook bij Zaagmuldersweg)
