Gannets (Jan van Genten)
Lodewijk Baljon
About this artwork.
The roof of the underground car park of the Education Executive Agency (DUO) and the regional tax office in Groningen has been hidden from view by more than one thousand square metres of urban gardens, designed by Lodewijk Baljon landscape architects.
The publicly accessible roof garden merges seamlessly into the adjoining centuries-old Sterrebos. A light sculpture catches the eye at the highest point of the sloping garden, at a central point where many footpaths intersect. The two masts are inspired by courting gannets. The symbolism is multi-faceted: the sculpture references the two government departments in the building, the meeting of civil servants and residents of the city of Groningen and, last but not least, the meeting of nature and the city.
