J.E. Scholten

Marjolein Schaaf

About this artwork.

Please note: the allotment garden is open to the public from April to October.

The bust in the allotment garden complex Tuinwijck is a tribute to the industrialist Jan Evert Scholten (1849-1918). Scholten founded the allotment garden association Tuinwijck in 1913.

Scholten is portrayed in a smart suit and with a serious but friendly facial expression. Jan Evert was the son of Willem Albert Scholten; both played a major role in the establishment and development of the dairy, sugar, strawboard and potato flour mills in Groningen. As a result, they were also able to exert a great deal of influence on social and cultural life.

Another monument to Jan Evert Scholten can be found in the Stadspark, which, like the 'Tuinwijck', was constructed on Scholten's initiative. He wanted to offer his employees as many opportunities for relaxation in their free time as possible so that they would not lapse into excessive drinking.

About the assignment.

Marjolein Schaafsma commissioned this bust to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the “Tuinwijck” complex. The unveiling was done by a granddaughter of J.E. Scholten, who praised her grandfather for his social engagement.
