ISO, The Envelope Sculpture no. 2

Frank Sciarone

About this artwork.

Frank Sciarone developed The Envelope Sculpture from a few subtle drawings on an envelope, which resulted in his final sculpture in the Ruischerwaard. The sculpture consists of a large steel surface on which a smaller surface is positioned at right angles. On one side, the large steel surface is covered with corrugated iron: it is a reference to the water of the Damsterdiep and the Eemskanaal, and the neighbourhood which is wedged in between them. The size of the statue is comparable to the adjacent houses: 9 metres tall, 12 metres long and 4.5 metres at its widest point. Exactly one building plot was kept free for the statue, and the artwork therefore interrupts the row of houses.

The contribution of visual art was brought up at a relatively early stage in the development of the Ruischerwaard district. During a workshop, artists gave their views on a possible role for visual art in the area during discussions with urban planners. One of Frank Sciarone's ideas was to earmark a building plot for a piece of artwork. The workshop resulted in an art commission based on Sciarone's plan and other ideas.

In the urban design of the district, the emphasis is mainly on the north-south connection. Sciarone’s sculpture emphasises the east-west connection, because it offers passage to the park-like area to the west of the houses.
