Iron plastic (IJzerplastiek)
Siep van den Berg
About this artwork.
Continuous lines and right angles form the organizing principle in Iron Plastic. In this interplay, closed surfaces are created in the primary colors red, yellow, blue, black and white, and open surfaces that enter into a relationship with the environment. Harmony and clarity are two important basic themes in the work of Siep van den Berg.
Siep van den Berg was commissioned by Rijksgebouwendienst Noord - through the Art and Business Foundation - to make a work of art for the construction of the (former) Institute for Soil Fertility of the University of Groningen. Initially the sculpture was placed in the canteen, but later it was placed in the outside area. The artwork was restored in 2013; the sculpture regained its sleek shapes and original colors. Since its restoration, the artwork on the access road of De Harener Holt has been in public space, thanks to the efforts of Simon Deinum (the author of Dichter bij Siep), GEM Haren Noord and Ateliers MTW.
Siep van den Berg studied, lived and worked in Groningen from 1930 to 1954. In addition to his paintings and sculptures, he made brick reliefs for various (boiler) houses in the city.
