Entreekunstwerk Hoogkerk
Reinier van den Berg
About this artwork.
Whoever enters Hoogkerk via the roundabout on the Zuiderweg is welcomed by Verleden, heden en toekomst ('Past, present and future'). The work of art made of Corten steel, with a pillar in the middle with an image of a human brain on top, is full of references to Hoogkerk.
The artwork has a round shape, but is not completely closed: the artist wanted to show that Hoogkerkers are open to the world. The plates that are linked together represent the close-knit community that is Hoogkerk. The rectangular plates themselves symbolize straw bales and sugar cubes, two real Hoogkerk products.
Illustrations have been punched out of a number of these plates, which show subjects typical of Hoogkerk. This is what they refer to:
Lilies and clock - parts of the old municipal coat of arms
Group of people - the many volunteers who are committed to Hoogkerk
Theresiakapel - former Catholic chapel
Ruskenveenseplas - recreation
Truck - transport
The Polar Bear - Pirate Channel
Sugar beet - the factory
Finally, there is the image of the human brain, on top of the pillar. These brains refer to Kantorenpark Kranenburg, where people mainly work with the head.
About the assignment.
In 2017, the opportunity arose to make the entrance of Hoogkerk (at the A7 exit) more attractive with money from the municipality of Groningen, by placing a work of art on the roundabout on the Zuiderweg. The Kunst Commissie Hoogkerk (Art Committee Hoogkerk) asked artist Reinier van den Berg to make a design. This was subsequently carried out with financial assistance and cooperation from companies, Municipality, Province, funds, donations and residents. On December 13, 2019, Verleden, heden en toekomst was festively opened by Deputy Fleur Gräper.
