Cube Project (Kubusproject)
Karl Pelgrom, Eugène Terwindt
About this artwork.
The ten cubes here in a circle are all the same size, but made of different materials. The Cube Project originally consisted of thirty cubes, which from 1976 formed part of a large environmental project in honor of the then new construction.
Artists Eugène Terwindt (1941) and Karl Pelgrom (1927-1994) worked together on the assignment. Terwindt had a background in both the visual arts and architecture. It was important to him that his artworks matched the buildings in the area. He also liked to give his works a clear geometric pattern and large dimensions. Pelgrom believed that art should blend organically into its surroundings. Both visions came together in the Cube Project.
The cubes were spread over the grounds and the buildings in different materials and designs, such as marble, bronze, Cortès steel, metal and wood. Not all civil servants in the offices were enthusiastic about the Cube project at the time. Some cubes were removed or moved to the basement. Terwindt made this new arrangement in 2014 from the cubes that were still in good condition.
