Crouching woman with amphora (Hurkende vrouw met kruik)

Gerrit Bolhuis

About this artwork.

A half-naked young woman, who seems immersed in thought, crouches by the water to fill her amphora.

The municipality of Groningen purchased the statue in 1955. A few years earlier it had been shown in plaster at the Sonsbeek exhibition in Arnhem. Gerrit Bolhuis was commissioned by the municipality to execute the “fountain statue”, as he called it, in stone. In 1954, Crouching woman with amphora was part of a sculpture exhibition in the Stadspark as part of the 340th anniversary of the University of Groningen.

The statue, which was placed at its current location in 1955, is situated in the middle of the pond. This location was chosen because the artist felt that it would be best protected from children who might otherwise climb on it.

In winter, Crouching woman with amphora is protected with sheathing.

Bronze versions of this statue can be found in Amsterdam and The Hague.
