Civilisation, protection, culture, dismantling (Beschaving, bescherming, cultuur, ontmanteling)
Peet Verrijn Stuart
About this artwork.
The sculpture is sober in form, but nonetheless evokes a multitude of associations – such as with a sandwich, a fireplace with a screen and especially with Mickey Mouse. The material of which the sculpture is made – rolled sheet steel – has the property that it will rust and change colour under the influence of weather conditions.
In 1989, the artwork was part of a temporary installation on display in the space belonging to the artists' initiative Lokaal 01 in Breda. Beforehand – in 1987 – Peet Verrijn Stuart had already approached the municipality of Groningen with the offer to place the artwork on an outdoor location in the city when exhibition in Breda was over. And with success: Civilisation, protection, culture, dismantling was given a place on Heerdenpad in 1992.
