City marker S06 Bruchstück für Luigi Nono

Heiner Müller

About this artwork.

Heiner Müller's design is a monument to death. On six horizontal beams, which together represent the world map, there are red dots depicting hotbeds of war. A poem is engraved on a ten-metre-high black stone tower: “Brüchstuck für Luigi Nono”. The composer Nono was originally asked to fill in this location, but died prematurely. Müller's monument is therefore also a tribute to his friend Luigi Nono.

The music that initially accompanied this work of art was an excerpt from Nono's composition about Auschwitz. When approaching the city marker, which is hidden in a wooded area, the music and sound become audible – the scratching of nails and children's screams. Local residents found this too frightening for children playing in the vicinity of the monument, so that element has been removed.

The work forms part of the Stadsmarkeringen, The Books of Groningen, marking the city boundaries, project.
