City marker S05
Gunnar Daan
About this artwork.
Gunnar Daan designed a steel construction with two transparent, stainless steel 'book pages. The city is depicted in two perspectives on the pages of the book. The urban interior has the shape of a Stoa: a colonnade. The exterior of the city is represented by towers that merge into space.
The city markers are close to the point where a motorway and canal pass under a railway bridge. But the location itself can only be reached by walking, cycling or sailing. The contrast between the busy traffic on the one hand and the secluded quiet spot on the other marks the border; once you have passed the city marker, the frenzy of the city comes towards you, or follows the tranquillity of the countryside.
The work forms part of the Stadsmarkeringen, The Books of Groningen, marking the city boundaries, project.
