City and Country (Stad en Lande)
Nicolas Dings
About this artwork.
In consultation with residents of the village of Garmerwolde, the artist Nicolaas Dings created a work of art that connects city to countryside, and the past with the present and the future. He was inspired by the characteristic “bumpy” landscape of North Groningen, with its residential hills, historical infrastructure and agricultural activity.
A number of bronze figures and elements stand on a raised terrazzo plateau, with a pattern on top reminiscent of watercourses and city roads. They symbolise the modern agricultural landscape (the dressed hare with the shovel), the economy (the sphere) and vigilance (the dog).
On the seat of the brick-built bench are the words City and Country.
This work of art is a gift from the former municipality of Ten Boer to the residents of Garmerwolde, in recognition of the completion of the reconstruction and redevelopment of L. van der Veenstraat, W.F. Hildebrandstraat and the new Meester Rijkensstraat.
