Bunker
About this architecture.
This bunker was built in 1950 by the semi-secret Air Force Corps to signal (enemy) aircraft from the Soviet Union. The air guards at this 'lookout' searched the airspace by sight and hearing. Due to the arrival of fighter jets and better radar technology, observation in this way became superfluous and the KLD was eventually disbanded in 1968. After that, the bunker was given a new military function as a war command post of the army, until that function also lapsed at the end of the 1980s.
In the 1990s, the bunker was squatted and it became a well-known place for movie nights and punk, house and rock parties with DJs from home and abroad. The unusually colored walls and graffiti artworks also date from this period. The municipality tolerated this until new construction was built and the new residents demanded that the activities stop.
In the meantime, the users of this bunker have become a lot smaller: the constant low temperature of the bunker made it an ideal wintering place for bats. Just like the Sterrebos and the R.K. Kerkhof on Hereweg, the bunker is important for the bat population in Groningen.
