Bro Bro Brille
Gunnar Westman
About this artwork.
A Danish children's song prompted Gunnar Westman to create this sculpture of dancing children. Bro Bro Brille means “Bridge Bridge Circle”, a creep-through-sneak-through game.
Westman's statue has a closed shape and is made of a cylindrical piece of granite, originating from an old roller. This basic shape is clearly visible in the sculpture. The movement the figures make – dancing in a circle – seems to be adapted to the shape of the material. The relief is shallow, with the exception of the two larger people standing with their arms up. As a result, the closed shape is broken open towards the top. The greatly simplified figures of children depicted almost seem to be stuck to these two figures. The sculpture is divided in two by the difference in depth, with the children forming the lower part and the adults the upper part.
About the assignment.
The management of Vroom & Dreesman donated the statue to the city of Groningen in 1958, in honour of the opening of the department store.
