Armenlap (Tomb of the poor) Wittewierum
George van Engelen
About this artwork.
The Armenlap in Wittewierum is a memorial to the people without money who were buried here for free and often without a name and without a memorial stone until 1967.
The artwork is divided into three rows indicated by the letters L, M and N. These are the last three rows before the back path, with N as the last row. The specific spot is indicated by the numbers 1 to 29. The unnamed graves are most likely empty. If there is an asterisk after the information, it means that the death certificate or the details of the Civil Registry can be found on the internet.
About the assignment.
The corner of the cemetery where the Armenlap is located was previously only grass. When Wittewierum Cemetery was able to buy the piece from the municipality, partly thanks to a bequest to the Funeral Association, this work of art was placed there in 2013 as a memorial. The Ten Post Historical Association was also involved.
Location.
Bloemhofweg Wittewierum (begraafplaats)
