Aries (Ram)

About this artwork.

The ram, with its large horns, lies atop a stone pedestal into which the lower body and legs of the animal appear to have sunk. Jan van Baren created this stylised ram in 1977, as part of a planned series of twelve zodiac signs, which he never completed. In 1996 Aries was installed in the green space on the Taco Mesdagplein. Another sculpture that the artist made in this series is The Fish (De Vis), which is located in the city garden on Mauritsstraat. 
 
Jan van Baren primarily created figurative sculptures of stone, bronze, wood and combinations thereof. There are several sculptures by the artist – mostly animal figures – in the city of Groningen.
